NEO Academy & Yūgen: Catalyst Vol. One
One Night Event
August 24th, 2019
Miles Davis, Billie Horn, Saburo Kurokawa, Ren Matsumoto, and Kieran Saint were gathered around Reika. It seemed as if they were bitching and complaining to my niece about not being booked on this show. I would have smacked them up, but Reika is more diplomatic than I am.
She then told them all that there was a reason why there were left off the card. I’ll break down the specifics. Next month, all five wrestlers would be placed in a special showcase match. The winner? He would receive an entry into Yūgen’s Cascade Crown in October. They’d also be the first man to wrestle on a Yūgen event.
Miles and Billie were overjoyed. Ren eagerly shook my niece’s hand and thanked her. Kieran gave a stoic head nod. Saburo? He just smirked.
Fukushima Zombie & Niko Nishijima O [12:03 via Jisatsu Sākuru] | Morgiana & Gina Yanagi X
A decent reaction from the crowd as the match started off. Niko went at Gina. Noticed that Gina was a little less mouthy today, though, she did call Niko a scrub early on. Niko didn’t like that. A big German suplex from Nishijima. She bridged into a pin, but Gina kicked out. Niko spent a few minutes smothering Gina and keeping her grounded. Sound strategy. She hammered in a rear naked choke. Morgina came in to make the save. Decent team work right there. Niko attempted a deadlift, but Gina powered out of it. Nasty forearm by Gina; Niko got rocked. Gina tagged out, as did Niko. The fans got really excited as Fuku and Morgiana met in the center of the ring. Must have been because they were both eccentric or something. Anyway, a quick lock-up, but Fuku hit an arm drag. Morgiana popped up and got hit with another one. A dropkick floored Morgiana. Fuku pinned her and got a two-count.
Fuku went for a rear nake choke of her own, but Morgiana reversed it with a standing switch. Nice sleeper hold by Morgiana. Fuku worked her way to the ropes―big lungblower by Morgiana. Sweet. She went for the pin, but Fuku kicked out. Tag out to Gina. Nifty enziguri and forearm combo. Mean STO by Gina. She went for another pin; got another two-count. Tag in to Morgiana once again. Fuku got rocked by another forearm, then a release suplex from Morgiana. Pin got broken up by Niko. Morgiana attempted another sleeper, but it got countered. Tag out to Niko. Morgiana got floored by an O-Goshi throw. Step-up knee before Morgiana could even get her bearings. Niko went for the pin; two-count. Nishijima went for a powerbomb, but Morgiana slipped out and tagged Gina. Nice back and forth between Gina and Niko. Gina nearly landed her Prada Not Gucci rip-cord forearm, but Niko countered with a Harai Goshi. Fuku got tagged in; Jisatsu Sākuru 630 Senton. Niko cut Morgiana off as Fuku picked up the three-count. Good bout.
Leah Taylor | BANG BANG [15:00 Time Limit Draw]
Decent outing by both parties. A bit of style’s clash if you ask me; but hey, those make good match-ups. BANG BANG pushed the pace early on. A big O-Goshi sent Leah to the mat. Been trying to get BANG BANG to rely on her wrestling instincts a bit more; she’ll revert back to her Judo tendencies in a pinch. Kana Basami into a pinning predicament; Leah kicked out. A knee to the gut shut BANG BANG down. Neckbreaker by Leah. Beautiful form. Went for the pinfall and got a two-count. Leah spent the next four our so minutes out-grappling BANG BANG; I made a note to work on that. BANG BANG later got caught by a rolling calf slicer. She made it to the ropes just in time. Leah went to pick up opponent. BANG BANG kicked out her knee―Ude-Hishigi-Hiza-Gatame! Leah was in trouble, but BANG BANG locked to move in too close to the ropes. Watch that positioning. The match carried on, but no one was able to line up that kill shot move. The bell rang. The referee declare the match a time limit draw.
Destroy All (Mayuka Fujikawa & Yumie Aiso) O [16:32 via Modified Equal Dragon Weapon] | Big KELLZ & Karen Willow X
I’ll be honest, this match lasted longer than I could have possibly imagined. I just assumed Big KELLZ and Karen were going to turn on each other right away; that normally what happens in training. Instead, seemed like they were making an effort to try and win…
At least in the beginning.
Karen and Yumie got things rolling. Their exchanges were a bit off. Karen kept trying to grapple her; Yumie would respond with a stiff strike. That went on for a while. Karen eventually got hot and punched Yumie in the titty. Yumie winched for the pain, but the strike really just pissed her off. Koppu kick from Yumie. Instead of going for the pin, Yumie drug Karen into the corner and tagged Mayuka in. She tossed Karen around for a few minutes before she went for a big lariat. Karen rolled out of the way and tagged Big KELLZ. She and Mayuka rumbled for a bit. Big KELLZ left her feet after a lariat. Two-count. A jumping high knee later stunned Mayuka; Big KELLZ followed up with a leaping headbutt. Two-count. Karen made a blinded tag as Big KELLZ stood up. Mayuka was focused on Big KELLZ and didn’t see Karen as she soared off the top rope with a cross-body. Two-count.
Big KELLZ and Karen worked some quick tags. They looked good—until Karen hit blind tag while Big KELLZ was in the process of pinning Mayuka. She was HOT too. So hot that was she slapped the mess out of Karen and left her alone in the ring. Karen didn’t go down without a fight. She delivered dropkicks to both opponents. Superwoman punch attempt, but Mayuka countered with a discuss lariat. Tag out to Yumie. Mayuka tossed Karen with a Fire Thunder throw; Yumie caught her with a cutter. Three-count.
Cora O [21:07 via Straight Jacket Brainbuster] | Kanako Matsudaira X
First things first, this was a beautifully worked match. Both fought really hard; both showed a lot of heart. Reika’s vision of Joshi wrestling shined brightly here. Going to sit down with all the students and break this match down next week.
Started off hot with Cora and Kanako trading forearms. Kanako had the edge and then took control of the match. She switched things up and hit her discuss lariat far earlier than normal. Got a two-count for it. Punk kick! That rocked Cora and kept her on the mat. Kanako hit a leaping senton. Big air; big impact. Only got her a two-count though. Kanako was in full control in that moment, but she got cocky and tried to out-wrestle Cora on the mat. A lapse in judgement right there. They chain-wrestled for a little bit. Then Kanako attempted a Fujiwara armbar; Cora with the counter. She rolled through and put Kanako into a grounded neck crank. The ropes saved Kanako’s bacon. Kanako scrambled to get up; a snap dragon suplex put her back down. Another two-count.
The “Big Move” portion of the match commenced. Release leg hook belly-to-back suplex by Cora. Springboard enziguri from Kanako. Stalling Tree of Woe dropkick by Cora. Roundhouse and sliding lariat combo from Kanako. Both left it all in the ring. Exhaustion soon hit―time to separate the good from the great. Kanako struck with a flurry of wild strikes; many connected. A palm strike caught Cora on the chin; she got rocked. Kanako hit her Pink Sparkle running blockbuster. One, Two, Th―no! Cora got her foot on the ropes. No matter; Kanako drug her to the middle of the ring and tried again...Cora with a step-up knee to the face. Cobra Clutch crossface! Kanako got to the ropes. Cora pulled her away and hit a spinning neckbreaker. Straight jacket brainbuster! Cora went for the pin; three-count.
My niece walked to the ring afterwards. She commended both women for leaving their hearts out in the ring. She then turned to Cora. Reika told Cora that she had just earned herself a Yūgen EXceleration Championship opportunity. She’d face Adrianna Wilde on Fallen Leaves: Night One. Cora looked excited; the fans cheered. Reika also told Kanako to cheer up; she’d have opportunities down the line as well.
Dani Sandström & Nao Saegusa O [21:04 via The Long Goodnight] | Yumi Song & Milena LeCavalier X
Going to focus less on the play-by-play action in this one and just give you my impressions of each wrestler and the teams. Yumi and Milena? They worked well together. They didn’t talk much in the ring, but they did communicate through body language. Yumi used her power advantage to keep her team rocking and rolling; Milena would then come in and deliver the thunder.
Dani and Nao? They actually weren’t too bad of a pairing either. Though, it’s clear their respective styles didn’t mesh. Dani also looked down on Nao a few times. Saw her cursing under her breath when Nao pulled off a sloppy frankensteiner. Nao was a bit slow to start off. I’m not sure if she wasn't overwhelmed or not. But, things started to click for her as the match progressed. Dani didn’t have those problems. She came out like she had something to prove.
There were some nice exchanges between Nao and Yumi. They had the David and Goliath thing going now. Yumi threw out a bunch of suplexes. Also nearly killed Nao with a Uraken. Saegusa used speed to get back into the match. She hit forearms and dropkicks. Her moonsault knee also clipped and disorientated Yumi. Dani and Milena? They had their battles as well. They didn’t zip around much though; mostly just tried to kill each other with blistering strikes. Fans were really into it.
Match came to a close when Yumi tried to launch Nao at Milena for an assisted Extinction Crisis knee. Dani stopped that with a chop-block and a low roundhouse. Yumi rolled to the outside; Nao took her out with a trust fall drive. Milena went for a lariat―Dani countered with a neckbreaker. Grounded Cobra Clutch by Dani. Milena gets up and gets a hand on the ropes. Dani kicks that arm. Nasty knee to Milena’s back; the champion let out a groan. Backstabber! Dani went for the pin and got the three-count!
Crowd went crazy after Dani pinned the Yūgen Eternity Championship. Dani? She remained poised. She did ask for a mic, though. After she got it, Dani that she’d been watching Milena. She saw how strong Milena was, how dominant Milena was. She was a bit shocked that she defeated Kagami, but that just went to show how great she was―
But none of that would be the case when she stepped into the ring with Dani. And, that match would occur soon. Dani then challenged her to a match on Fallen Leaves: Night Two.
Milena response? She accepted.
She also told Dani that she was going to eat those words on Night Two. She was going to witness first had why Kagami fell to her.
